Royale Union Saint-Gilloise attacker Relebohile Mofokeng has shared proud moments of lifting his first trophy in less than a month since joining the Belgian Jupiler Pro League outfit.
It took just a few weeks for the reigning South African Player of the Season to win his first trophy with USG. They beat favourites and reigning Belgian champions Club Brugge in the Belgian Super Cup 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time.
In the tight clash, Mofokeng was introduced just after the 60th minute mark for his official debut. The 21-year-old showed good signs just minutes after being introduced as he took a shot but was saved by the Club Brugge goalkeeper, Yann Sommer.
But he was on the pitch as USG equalised, forcing penalties, and the former Orlando Pirates star scored his team’s fifth and final penalty to seal the win for USG, for their second Belgian Super Cup.
“I am happy because I won my first cup here; very excited for everyone, very welcoming, and everyone was there for me to help me to boost my confidence,” he said as per the club’s X account.
“That’s why I went to the penalty. So I think my teammates are the best; that’s why we won this cup, and we are family. So that’s why.
“Yes, Coach Artur came to us and told us the names of the people who are kicking because they saw me kick it yesterday at training so yeah, it boosted my confidence as well because it’s the first goal in the first game so I think the confidence is high now. We can keep on going.”
