MTN have confirmed the prize money for this year’s MTN8 tournament during the tournament’s official launch.
Last year, Orlando Pirates lifted the trophy for a fourth successive season, beating Stellenbosch FC 3-0 in the final.
It was Pirates’ 14th Wafa Wafa title, and they are now just one short of record champions Kaizer Chiefs after Amakhosi last lifted the trophy in 2014.
On Wednesday evening, the Premier Soccer League officially launched this year’s editions of the tournament.
The winning team will once again receive R10 million, while for every goal scored in the tournament MTN will donate R20 000 to charity.
The Last Fan Standing and the Last Legend Standing legs of the MTN8 will also return, with one fan set to walk away with R1 million.
This year’s theme of the MTN8 will be “there can only be one” – only one winning team to talk away with the trophy and only one fans to claim the R1 million prize.
The tournament kicks off on Saturday, when defending champions Pirates host Durban City at 15:00, before Mamelodi Sundowns welcome Polokwane City at 18:00.
The action continues on Sunday, when AmaZulu host Sekhukhune United, with the quarter-finals ending with Chiefs hosting Golden Arrows.
