Rangers legend Ally McCoist has urged Olwethu Makhanya not to rush into another move, insisting the South African defender should focus on establishing himself at Ibrox after making an encouraging start to life in Scotland.
The 22-year-old has attracted attention following his early performances for Rangers, with his progress putting him firmly in the spotlight to a potential move to the English Premier League.
However, McCoist believes Makhanya should resist any temptation to move on too quickly, arguing that remaining at Rangers and building on his promising start would be the best course of action at this stage of his career.
Speaking to talkSPORT Bet Online Casino, the former Rangers striker agreed with Pat Nevin’s assessment of the situation, suggesting the young defender has plenty to gain from continuing his development at Ibrox.
“I don’t think Makhanya should be in any rush to go anywhere,” McCoist said. “He’s had a very good start, though the weekend was maybe a little reminder that you don’t get any easy games and you’re a target.
“So, from that point of view, there’s no doubt that with the way he’s started, there will be clubs looking at him. But I would be advising him to stay for a while, get the job done, keep getting rave reports, and see where it takes him.”
McCoist’s comments carry particular significance given his legendary status at Rangers, where he remains one of the club’s most celebrated figures.
