Sundowns coach Godfrey Sapula made three changes to the side that drew with FC Masar in the tournament opener with Asanda Hadebe starting ahead of Khutso Pila, Amanda Mthandi for Wendy Shongwe and Nthabiseng Majiya for Isabella Ludwig.
The Hollywoodbets Super League champions could have gotten on the score sheet inside the opening five minutes but Ronnel Donnelly hit the upright from inside the box after capitalising on the opposition’s poor clearance.
The Cameroonian side scored in the eighth minute through Ajara Nchout but it was flagged offside. The sides exchanged possession with either trying to penetrate the other’s defense with no luck. Three minutes after the half hour mark Nchout took a shot from range only for it to go over the bar.
Five minutes to the break Bambanani Mbane headed home a Majiya pass but it didn’t stand as it was ruled offside. Two minutes later Donnelly set-up Refilwe Tholakele and the Botswana international slotted home to break the deadlock with Sundowns’ first goal at the tournament.
There were two chances for Donnelly to double the lead after that but she couldn’t convert. Monele Nnanga also had an opportunity to level for the tournament’s new comers in injury time of the half but her shot went slightly wide.
Banyana ba style returned unchanged for the second half while Lekie made one substitution. There were chances for the former African champions to get a second goal through Majiya and Donnelly respectively in the early minutes of the half but were both easy saves for the Lekie goalkeeper.
Lelona Daweti also came close to scoring with her first touch after being introduced in the 77th minute from a Karabo Dlamini corner but the former shot just over the bar. Six minutes to time the Cameroonians equalised with Nchout assisting Makoma Shalom. That was short lived, though, as Dlamini forced Makana Yakana to score in her own net two minutes later to restore Sundowns’ lead.
Sundwons’ last group match is against FUS Rabat on Saturday.
