Mamelodi Sundowns defender Grant Kekana believes the return of Cassius Mailula will bring plenty of goals this season as he looks to revive his career.
Mailula was one of the standout players for Sundowns when he surprisingly earned a promotion to the first team back in 2022 and enjoyed an incredible breakout season, scoring 15 goals, with four assists in 31 games.
This earned him a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) side FC Toronto, which proved to be an ill-fated spell as he failed to establish himself in the first XI – before two seperate loan moves to Wydad Athletic Club and KV Kortrijk.
His time in Morocco under former Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena, was seen as a largely successful spell, with six goals and seven assists in 36 games, which included starring at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
However, his time in Belgium was one to forget, and his contract was then terminated via mutual agreement, leading towards a return to Sundowns as a free agent, just three years after the reported R25-million sale.
“A good addition for us, we’ve always loved Cash, he’s always done the business for us, and we’re happy he’s scoring again, his confidence is coming back and it wasn’t difficult to gel with us – when he was here, most of us are still here,” Kekana said ahead of their opening home league game on Wednesday.
“But you know [he’s] a quality player and we know he’s going to be banging a lot of goals this season; we just need to make sure his confidence is back and he just keeps striking for us but yeah – we’re happy with Cash.”
Mailula will be aiming to get another opportunity to add to his two goals in his opening three games when Sundowns host Marumo Gallants this evening at Loftus Versfeld (19h30).
