Mamelodi Sundowns extended their Premier Soccer League (PSL) record with a convincing 5-2 win over AmaZulu in their Betway Premiership clash at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday evening.
Following Orlando Pirates’ 2-0 win over Sekhukhune United that took them up to 10 points and unbeaten in the league after four games, Sundowns needed to make a statement.
And in their fortress in Tshwane where they are now a record-extending 32 league games unbeaten, they delivered a message, despite two lapses of concentration seeing them concede twice, both to Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya.
The Zimbabwe international has scored in each of the five AmaZulu games this season in all competiitons, with seven in total – showing his immense potential at the age of 23.
But it was the home side who secured three points, with the opener coming in sublime fashion with a crisp volley from Brayan Leon.
Teboho Mokoena doubled the lead with a sumptuous free-kick before the break to put Sundowns in control, and despite the early score mere seconds into the second half from Ngwenya, Sundowns regained control.
Tashreeq Matthews managed to restore the two-goal advantage, and Leoń was set up by the speedy winger monents later to make it 4-1 in the evening, with a routine tap-in finish.
However, Ngwenya bagged his brace after 70 minutes, profiting from a Ronwen Williams error as his ventured too far outside his area.
Youngster Bennet Mokoena added the icing on top, to complete the five goals for the home side.
Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso will be delighted over the three points nonetheless and the return of influential midfielder Mokoena ahead of their second leg MTN8 semi-final against Golden Arrows on Sunday.
Masndawana need to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the opening leg that took place at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium this past weekend.
