Khanye Questions Veli Mothwa’s Selection

iDiski TV analyst Junior Khanye has questioned the selection of goalkeeper Veli Mothwa following Bafana Bafana’s 2-2 draw with Uganda in Orlando on Friday evening.

The AmaZulu man got a start in South Africa’s goals as they opened their 2025 Africa Cup Of Nations Group K qualifying campaign, replacing injured Ronwen Williams.

In a game that looked to be going Bafana’s way as they took a slender 1-0 first-half lead, Hugo Broos’ men conceded two goals after the resumption of the break with Mothwa caught off his line in both goals.

The result saw the 2023 AFCON bronze medallists in third position in the group with one point, two points adrift from group leaders Congo ahead of the trip to South Sudan on Tuesday.

Khanye believes this is a game South Africa should’ve won and were let down by Mothwa’s inexperience that earned the Cranes a valuable point.

“I’m questioning even now, “why is Veli Mothwa in Bafana Bafana?” Khanye said on iDiski TV.

“I have been questioning this all along because even if you bench him, eventually you are going to have to play him. He has to play and represent us.

“Today, we had a situation whereby Ronwen Williams is not available because he’s injured. But here we go putting Veli Mothwa in and he goes and makes a huge blunder. I need to be honest we were let down by him.

“Goal number one, I understand he was beaten, but goal number two why did he even try to think he could catch the ball? That guy was too far, even if the ball swayed, it was from far I think about 45 yards. Just punch that ball out I mean you are an experienced goalkeeper. We are not talking about a newcomer and that is where I question his selection.”
