Al Ahly president Mahmoud El Khatib has praised Pitso Mosimane, saying the South African is among the top 50 coaches in the world.
There had been some rumours about Mosimane’s future at the club after Al Ahly and his representatives had reached a stalemate in recent contract talks, as reported by iDiski Times.
However, Al Ahly’s Head of Transfers and Marketing Amir Tawfik later released a statement that both parties agreed to continue until the end of the current contract by the end of 2021/22 before negotiations would commence.
Khatib, who has been a long admirer of Mosimane, has now come out and backed the South African even further, saying he is among the top 50 coaches in the world.
“Mosimane is one of the 50 best coaches in the world at the moment,” he said on Monday during a press conference.
“We must forget what happened and think about what is to come. We have a very strong technical staff and a group of players with high capabilities, and all of this requires a strong start in the spirit of the red jersey.”
Khatib was holding a press briefing to announce his candidacy as president for the next elections and also took the moment to explain what him and ‘Jingles’ spoke about in their first ever talk.
“I felt how much he loves the club and appreciates the club’s history. He made history in Sundowns and when we called him, he was keen to come to the club which he described as the ‘African Club of the Century’,” he said.
Mosimane has won four trophies since taking over at Al Ahly, two CAF Champions League titles, the CAF Super Cup and an Egyptian Cup, while also finishing third at the FIFA Club World Cup and collecting an Egyptian League medal, but the latter competition had already been secured by Rene Weiler when Mosimane took over.
