Benin Coach – Some Bafana Players Can Play in Europe

Benin coach Gernot Rohr believes there are players in the South African national senior squad that have quality to play in Europe.

South Africa and Benin are looking to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup sitting in first and second places, respectively in qualifying Group C after Bafana moved to the summit with their 2-0 win over Lesotho.

They meet on Tuesday in Ivory Coast, with Bafana having already defeated the Cheetahs at home at the start of the qualifying campaign.

Rohr spoke to iDiski Times Digital editor David Kappel in edition 196 of the newspaper where he described his relationship with his South African counterpart Hugo Broos, how great he has done with players capable of playing in Europe.

“Hugo Broos is a friend, we meet very often in the games, of course, in the tournaments” Rohr told IDiski Times.

“It’s a good experience and the relationship is good. When he was in Cameroon, I have good memories from Hugo Broos. We beat him when he was in Cameroon for the World Cup, and we could qualify with the Super Eagles. And also we are friends. We have good, good meetings sometimes inside the CAF and I see the good work he’s doing and the big AFCON they played”.

“Some of the Bafana players are good enough to play in Europe because really the level is very high in this league here. I saw Mamelodi Sundowns losing last Sunday, but the Pirates have also a great team. The level is good enough to play also in Europe, but they don’t have so many”.
