Benni McCarthy started his reign as Kenya coach with a six-goal thriller against The Gambia.
The South African mentor picked two PSL players in his starting XI, namely Stellenbosch FC’s Brian Onyango and Richards Bay goalkeeper Ian Otieno.
The first half was short on highlights before Otieno wrote the headlines, first causing a penalty in the 30th minute before denying Masa Barrow from the spot to keep the game deadlocked.
Both teams entered the break goalless, but it was Barrow who made up for his earlier miss when he opened the scoring in the 55th minute.
Things went from bad to worse for McCarthy and the Harambee Stars when Brighton & Hove Albion star Yankuba Minteh beat Otieno from a tight angle to make it 2-0 after 61 minutes.
Kenya’s main striker Michael Olunga gave his country a lifeline when he converted a penalty in the 69th minute to half the deficit.
The Harambee Stars equalised just five minutes later when substitute Mohammed Bejaber scored a wonder goal to level matters.
However, when it looked like Kenya were on top, Gambia took the lead again in the 83rd minute when a misplaced shot fell in the path of Barrow, who tucked home to complete his brace.
But Kenya managed to equalise once again when William Wilson scored his side’s third in the sixth minute of injury-time with the final kick of the game.
The draw didn’t help either side much, with Kenya now on six points from five games, while Gambia have four.
