Downs Star Named In Canal+ African Team Of Season

Mamelodi Sundowns star Ronwen Williams has been named on the African Team of the Season selected by French broadcaster Canal+.

Williams, 32, who recently signed a contract extension at Chloorkop, was the only player based in Africa included in the team.

The Sundowns shot stopper can look back at a brilliant individual campaign that saw him lift the African Football League and DStv Premiership titles so far, while also finishing third at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with Bafana Bafana.

Especially his penalty-saving abilities have grabbed world-wide attention after he saved four spot-kicks in the quarter-final against Cape Verde and another two in the third-place playoff against DR Congo.

He had also denied Al Ahly’s Ali Maaloul and Petro de Luanda’s Gilberto in the African Football League, and was the hero in the CAFCL quarter-final shootout win over Young Africans.

His most recent penalty save came against Iqraam Rayners in the DStv Premiership, where he has kept 15 clean sheets in 22 appearances and received nominations for the Footballer of the Season, the Player’s Player of the Season and the Goalkeeper of the Season.

Overall, the Bafana captain has kept 30 clean sheets in 45 games across all competitions, earning his spot in the Canal+ Team of the Season ahead of the likes of Andre Onana and Mohamed El Shenaway.
