Former Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Romain Folz’ return to coaching has seen him lead Olympique Akbou to safety in the Algerian Ligue 1 with two games to spare.
The Frenchman arrived at the club in a dire position in the relegation zone and in the past eight games, managed to steady the ship as they are now 12th in the 16-team league and six points from the drop zone with all but mathematically unassailable goal difference advantage.

And it’s been a project that was relatively gone under the radar with the 34-year-old combining his role at Akbou with his job at FIFA as a Performance Manager, working closely in North Africa Football Federations in recent months.
The French Moroccan had originally been set for a role as a Sporting Director for the 2025/26 season but after their run of indifferent form, he stepped in to aid the technical team as a head coach – which propelled them to safety with three wins and three draws, and two defeats in eight league games which included high-profile fixtures against USM Alger and MC Alger.
