The Chairman of Botswana Premier League side VTM, Vincent Mafuta has confirmed that former Orlando Pirates duo Sifiso Myeni and Rooi Mahamutsa have been issued release letters.
Myeni, 36, has been with the side for three seasons, helping them gain promotion to the elite league of Botswana, while Mahamutsa, 42, joined them two seasons ago, also playing a huge part in their push to the topflight.
Speaking with iDiski Times, Mafuta confirmed that the two players are now free agents after being released, and further expressed gratitude for the experienced duo’s hard work during their time at the club.
“Look, contracts of all our SA players finished [Mahamutsa & Myeni], and we have since issued release letters,” Mafuta told iDiski Times.
“Having them in the team was such a marvelous thing for us, especially Sifiso Myeni. He gave us something special, he gave us a lot, and he dig deep to assist the team.
“Personally, I won’t mind having him back as part of the technical team or our youth program, which we are working on – this must not sell the idea that he is coming back,” he added.
Mafuta clarified the issue of unpaid salaries which surfaced in the media in the past few months, stating that they’ve paid the players, and continued to speak highly of Myeni.
“Some publication once reported issues of unpaid salaries, I was disappointed as the author didn’t give us the opportunity to tell our side of story,” Mafuta said.
“But we did engage with their agent Lawrence Duze to finalize everything the guys have been paid. Unfortunately, I cannot disclose reasons because I am duty bound to protect them. They are our former players. They have families, and after all, they are human beings.
“But I will always speak highly of Sifiso Myeni, he is a true professional, people in Botswana loved him, he was our king maker.
“All in all, we wish them the best. They will forever remain in our hearts and Botswana Football in general.”
