‘After Khune And Williams We’ll Struggle’

Kaizer Chiefs development coach Aubrey Mathibe feels the professional clubs need to cast their nets wider to scout the new generation of goalkeepers.

Mathibe is currently working with the DStv Diski Challenge and assists the first team when current goalkeeper coach Ilyes Mzoughi heads on international duty with Mauritania.

As a former Chiefs goalkeeper during his playing days-turned coach, he weighed in on the recent criticisms of lack of young goalkeepers gaining opportunities in the professional ranks of South African football.

“Since we’re aware, all of us, that we are lacking on the goalkeeping department, everyone behind the scenes is working hard, most of the goalkeeper coaches, to get someone special in South Africa to come and help,” Mathibe said.

“I don’t think we don’t have goalkeepers, but maybe we’re not doing the old-fashioned way of going to the rural areas, to come with Aubrey Mathibe, or going somewhere to get the talent.

“We’re always around the big towns, more than going to the rural areas to check how we can get. We came from the small towns, they chose us from there, that’s why we’re here now.

“I’m from Kroonstad, a small town, the scouters came and saw me, it was a team from NFD, they were just promoted from Welkom, Unisaints FC – I was young, 17-years-old, that’s how I started my career.”

Mathibe believes the first step has already been taken to remedy the issue, with everyone being completely aware, there’s an issue in the country right now.

“I think they are, that’s why there’s a DDC now, but we need to work harder, as coaches, goalkeeper coaches, to help them, to make them aware that after the generation of Khune’s and Williams, we will struggle,” Mathibe said.

“I think we need to stand up now and look at… everyone is aware what’s going on, where looking for the new generation, so we’re aware…”
