Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Jethren Barr was crowned the Sports Direct FAI Cup champion after his Drogheda United sensationally stunned favourites Derry City 2-0 to lift the trophy this past weekend.
Barr, 29, has of late formed part of the Bafana makeshift squad although it has mostly been in the COSAFA Cup where he played all the games at the 2023 edition as South Africa fell short at the semi-finals to Zambia.
The Durban-born shotstopper joined Irish Premier Division outfit Drogheda United in January 2024 having been in the football wilderness since parting ways with Portadown in July last year.
On Sunday evening, Barr won his first major trophy with the club as strikes in each half from Andrew Quinn (37th min) and Douglas James-Taylor (58th min) secured the win for the underdogs who claimed the FAI Cup final upset.
Barr did not make the match-day squad but was on hand to support his fellow colleagues as they celebrated the club’s second ever FAI Cup triumph.

This is the former Bidvest Wits and Maritzburg United goalkeeper’s second spell in the British Isles having previously turned out for Northern Irish club Portadown.
His contract with the club runs down in December 2024 and it remains to be seen if he will extend his stay or seek employment elsewhere.
