Bafana Star Wins Third Title In Europe

Bafana Bafana and Omonia Nicosia midfielder Mihlali Mayambela won his second Cyprus League title with Stoiximan for the second time.

With four games remaining in the Cyprus League, Mayambela’s Omonia Nicosia mathematically won the league title for the first time since the 2020/21 season.

The 29-year-old attacker, who is the younger brother of former Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City dribbling wizard Mark Mayambela, joined Nicosia in January from Aris Limassol.

He had six months left on his contract with Aris but the club announced he had left by mutual agreement at the time.

Mayambela made his appearance in February, played only one game, suffered an injury he hasn’t recovered from, and missed the two Bafana Bafana friendlies.

After being unveiled by Nicosia, he penned a two-and-a-half year deal.

After 125 appearances with Aris during which he scored 19 goals and made 15 assists, Mayambela carved himself a new path which eventually saw him win two league titles since moving overseas as well as the Cypriot Super Cup in 2023.

The speedy winger missed out on the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco this year after being part of the 2023 squad that finished in a bronze medal spot.

He looks set to miss out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup through injury.
