Broos On Maseko Amid Sundowns, Westerlo Links

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has weighed in on the interest of Westerlo for SuperSport United winger Thapelo Maseko.

The 20-year-old is in line to make his senior international debut after a standout season with SuperSport which has naturally attracted interest in his services.

Sundowns and Westerlo are both said to have tabled offers for the mercurial winger that has grown in leaps and bounds under the guidance of head coach Gavin Hunt.

The Matsatsansa Young Player of the Year played in several positions, from left-wing back, to right forward and at times up-front and while SuperSport have rejected two bids from Westerlo, Broos feels his development could be best served in his native country, Belgium.

“It would be very good, should he make that move, you see what happened with Foster, he went to Belgium and one year later, he became a very good striker and another six months later he went to England,” Broos said.

“So that means that if you are open as a player and you want [to improve], if you have a good attitude, you can learn a lot in Europe because the opportunities are much bigger than here at the moment.

“So it should be good for, even young players if they have the opportunity, and if my information is right, it’s the same team that Foster was at the wanted him, so I know this team, they give chances to young players – it’s a coach also who gives chances to young players.

“So yeah, it should be good for a player like Maseko to go to a team like that and for all players, why is Morocco so good? They play in very good teams in Europe and this is a big difference.”

Maseko has scored four goals and registered two assists in 25 games in the 2022/23 season as SuperSport finished third in the DStv Premiership and qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup.
