Broos Runs The Rule Over Tau

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says it’s not necessarily the Percy Tau he wants to see but is pleased with his contributions.

Tau, 30, has been one of the talismans of the national team over the last decade since making his debut, and reached the 50-cap milestone in the 2-0 win over Benin this week in their latest 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

But his performances for the national team over the last year and a half has not been the explosive goal-scoring forward many have been accustomed to seeing from Tau.

However, his tireless work ethic, positional sense, awareness and off the ball running has not been something he’s lost, which Broos admitted in the past is important.

“You know, for us, what we wanted to do is have Percy play between the lines. He’s a good player that knows how to give an assist. But Benin, naturally, had someone shadow him, so it was difficult for us, but I’m happy with his performance,” Broos said after the Benin win.

“Percy worked a lot for the team, he might not have done what we asked of him, but when you have a player that works like that and wants to do what we expect, the manger can’t be dissatisfied.

“Again, it is not necessarily the Percy Tau that we want to see, but on the other hand, he worked hard for the team and that is also important.”

Tau has netted 16 goals for the senior national team in his 50 appearances since making his debut in 2015 but has netted just twice in his last 11 appearances.
