Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo believes Patrick Maswanganyi can complement Themba Zwane in the national team like his partnership with the late John Moshoeu.
Maswanganyi, 25, has emerged as a Premier Soccer League (PSL) Footballer of the Season contender and recently broke into the senior national team under Hugo Broos.
While Broos said he’s been impressed by ‘Tito’ in certain games this season, he was unable to stamp his authority in the 1-1 draw against Andorra in the recent FIFA Series before not getting minutes in the 3-3 draw against Algeria.
But Khumalo feels the Pirates playmaker should be given a chance to play alongside the Bafana attacking talisman.
“I would love to see Tito and Themba when they play together, what’s going to happen, Maswanganyi and Themba, both of them,” he said on the DNA Podcast with 10Bet.
“But again we can’t as a nation, then there’s debate, Tito is better than Themba, Themba is better than Tito, we can’t do that man.
“I mean they have their own ways of doing things and Tito is very good left footer, Themba left and right, I mean they’re both unbelievable players and I think. I don’t which other friendly [we will get a chance]… I just can’t wait, I want to see them both on the field.
“And we have one of the defensive midfielders that can just protect them, like a player of Mokoena or Mosele for that matter. It’s almost like [having Doctor and Shoes].”
South Africa will face off against Nigeria and Zimbabwe on 3 and 11 June for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
