Why Mayo & Hlanti Were Dropped

Hugo Broos has explained why Cape Town City striker Khanyisa Mayo and Kaizer Chiefs left-back S’fiso Hlanti were dropped from his preliminary squad.

Mayo and Hlanti were among 13 players left out from Broos’ preliminary selection to face Namibia and DR Congo next month, with Broos asked to explain some of his choices.

Broos explained that Mayo was dropped after his relatively slow start to the new campaign, where he is yet to find the back of the net.

“Mayo, for the moment, I think is lacking confidence,” he said during the announcement on SABC1.

“It’s not the same Mayo from last season, he scored, he was dangerous, he was [on form].

“A few games also, yesterday he came in [from the bench]. But also the previous games, this is not the Mayo we want to see.

“I read something about his coach [saying] ‘I have to give him the confidence, because for the moment he doesn’t have it’.”

Meanwhile, Broos was also asked to explain why he opted for Innocent Maela as one of his left-backs, despite the Orlando Pirates captain not being a regular in his team, while Hlanti was left out despite starting all games for Chiefs so far.

“Sometimes you have to make choices and there are 23 players now in the team,” he explained.

“I said it a few minutes ago, before the problem for me was to find the good players.

“And now the problem for me sometimes is which player I can choose for this position. That means, that’s a good sign, when the coach have to choose.

“So again, it’s just a choice.”
