Sasol have announced that their long-term sponsorship of the South African Football Association ended on Tuesday, 30 June.
The news come as Banyana Banyana prepare for their title defence at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco – with the training in Morocco already being halted due to financial disagreements between the players and SAFA.

However, after those issues were resolved, long-term Banyana sponsor Sasol announced that their deal with SAFA for the senior national women’s team and the Sasol league – where many of the current crop of players have come through – has ended.
“Sasol can confirm that our sponsorship agreement with the South African Football Association (SAFA), which included support for the senior women’s national team, Banyana Banyana, as well as the Sasol League, officially came to an end on 30 June 2025,” the statement read.
“We remain proud of the 16-year partnership with SAFA and the significant contribution we have made to the growth and visibility of women’s football in South Africa.
“Through this partnership, we have helped enable pathways for young women footballers from grassroots level to the international stage.
“We await feedback from SAFA regarding the terms of a potential renewal. Until an agreement is reached, Sasol no longer holds the rights to associate with Banyana Banyana and the Sasol League.
“Sasol continues to value the important role that women’s sport plays in driving empowerment and inclusion in South Africa.”
This publication attempted to get a comment from SAFA, but there was no reply at the time of publishing this article, while we also await a comment from Sasol.
SAFA held a “very successful Ordinary Congress” this past weekend, where president Dr. Danny Jordaan complained about the lack of sponsorship for SA’s national teams, stating that only two national teams are sponsored – Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana.
After the latest announcement, it’s currently only one SA national team that has a standing sponsorship. The Woman’s Africa Cup of Nations kicks off on Friday, 4 July, while Banyana enter the tournament on Monday, 7 July against Ghana.
