‘Club Owners Want To Reach Chiefs, Downs & Pirates Level’

Sekhukhune United midfielder Pogiso Mahlangu has hailed club owners, the Malatji brothers for being as ambitious as the ‘Big Three’.

The brothers bought the status of Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) and campaigned in the first division in the 2020/21 season before gaining promotion to the DStv Premiership the season after. The club finished 11th in their topflight debut and reached the Nedbank Cup final, losing 2-1 to Orlando Pirates.

Their Ke Yona Cup final appearance saw them seal passage to the CAF Confederation Cup. This past campaign, Babina Noko finished in fourth position to qualify for the CAF inter-club competition for the second season running.

Babina Noko started the season clouded in controversy after the resignation of new coach Peter Hyballa, but have since reshuffled their technical team with the return of Lehlohonolo Seema as head coach, assisted by Kaitano Tembo, while MacDonald Makhubedu moved into the Director of Football role.

Mahlangu insists his bosses’ ambition is to reach the level of South Africa’s ‘Big Three’, and how they are investing in the team.

The Malatjis, they are really amazing people,” Mahlangu told iDiski Times.

“When you look at the team, the team is still young, like a new-born baby. We are only three-four years old now, but we’ve achieved so much because of the Malatji family. They have really invested so much in the game. They love the game, and you can see the passion and you can see where they really want to go to.

“They want to reach great heights, they want to reach the level of your [Mamelodi] Sundowns, your [Kaizer] Chiefs, your [Orlando] Pirates in the next coming years, hence you can see the progress already now. They have really invested their time, and their money, they have really invested everything their souls in the game.”
