Former Bafana Bafana winger Delron Buckley has attributed inconsistency as the biggest challenge why South African youngsters aren’t making it abroad.
Buckley left for Germany as a 21-year-old in 1998 and joined VfL Bochum II and went on to enjoy almost two decades in Europe playing for sides such as Arminia Bielefeld, Borussia Dortmund and Mainz.

The 47-year-old told iDiski Times digital editor David Kappel in edition 185 that the leagues abroad are tougher than the PSL and players aren’t consistent every week here at home which might make it hard for them to adjust when they get that side.
“To be honest with you, that’s the problem with the PSL, it’s really different towards the English Premier League and the Bundesliga,” Buckley told iDiski Times.
“You got to be consistent, and you hardly find players who are always consistent every single game. Of course, they’ll have a good game, two games and then three off games, they’re not on form, and another two games on form. They’re not consistent every single game, putting on a performance.
“To be honest with you, because you can see for yourself, when players leave, they can be good here, the minute they leave and go overseas, it’s a different pair of shoes. Even the ones that play national team, they even play in the first teams where they are. They play in the second division or third division, they don’t even play in the first division, which is very difficult to find your feet and a position in their place.”
