Cardoso – Having Big Men Among Us Is Important

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has opened up on the resurgence of Denis Onyango in the first-team this season at the age of 39.

Onyango is arguably one of the finest goalkeepers in Premier Soccer League and African football history and looked to be winding down his career with the arrival of reigning CAF Footballer of the Year Ronwen Williams.

However, he’s seen increased game time with 12 games to his name, often deputising for Williams this season and continuing to showcase his ability to perform at high standards for Masandawana.

After keeping his eighth clean sheet for the season as they eased 3-0 past Stellenbosch on Sunday, all but mathematically sealing their eighth consecutive league title, Cardoso discussed the importance of the club legend.

The former Uganda captain is among the five options, alongside Williams, Reyaad Pieterse, Jody February and Sanele Tshabalala in the first team set-up.

“Having big men among us is very important, he’s big but he’s huge with his heart, his mind, and together with Ronwen, we have a wonderful team of goalkeepers, we have Reyaad, Jody and Sanele – a group that is quite strong,” Cardoso said.

“But based on the work sustained by Denis and Ronwen, I think we’re pretty comfortable on the position and still Denis is alive and kicking – we protected him today cause he had a small punch in contact, and we tried to protect him, it’s normal.

“And Ronwen, as I said in the flash interview before the match, he’s quickly coming back, we saw him dancing in the end, he’s okay and preparing for what we have next.”
