Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson suggested the Soweto Derby may be a platform for teenager Wandile Dduba to really announce himself.
The 19-year-old scored a stunning first goal in professional football last week in his full debut as Amakhosi beat Golden Arrows 1-0 at FNB Stadium on Tuesday.
It marked their first goal of 2024 and ahead of the fixture against rivals Orlando Pirates, there’s a real buzz that he could take centre-stage despite being at the start of his promising career.
“Duba has been planning this for the last three years, he’s been preparing himself mentally to play a derby, he’s been preparing himself mentally to play for Kaizer Chiefs, he’s been preparing himself in the Diski [squad] to score goals,” Johnson said when asked by iDiski Times if the teenager is ready for a Soweto Derby debut.
“What a better time for him if he gets the opportunity to get into the derby and score a goal, then he will just be cementing his place [in the team] as far as a footballer is concerned.”
Having been eliminated at the last-32 stage of the Nedbank Cup against Milford, the derby could provide the platform of confidence for Johnson and his troops for the remainder of the season.
“I think it’s not about Cavin Johnson, he will live and die – I think it’s about the legacy that we at this present moment, at this club, is looking to leave [behind],” Johnson said.
“If we do our job, work properly and go out and win the derby, it’s legacy we would have left at Kaizer Chiefs.”
