Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Edson Castillo has been crowned 2026 Venezuelan Apertura champion with his club Carabobo FC out in Venezuela.

Carabobo narrowly beat Puerto Cabello Academy 2-1 to walk away with the title, Castillo’s second trophy in three years after winning the Nedbank Cup with Amakhosi during the 2024/25 campaign.

Castillo, 32, parted ways with the Glamour Boys via mutual agreement after being informed he’s not part of the technical team’s plans for the 2025/26 season.

This was despite having signed a new one-year contract with an option to extend back in February 2025.

He left Chiefs as a firm fan favourite despite injuries disrupting his final season and left with five goals and two assists in 45 games over the two seasons at the club.

The Puerto Ordaz-born midfielder then joined Carabobo on a one-year contract where he’s scored four goals with two assists in 24 outings across all competitions.

This past weekend, Castillo bagged his first major domestic trophy since returning to Venezuela, marking a memorable debut season with Carabobo.
