SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has brushed off reports linking the club with a move for Orlando Pirates striker Zakhele Lepasa.
Lepasa, 27, spent six months on loan at SuperSport last year under Hunt where he netted two goals in 10 games before his return to Pirates.
This coincided with some impressive form for the Buccaneers and Bafana Bafana as he helped the nation qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and secure bronze at the tournament in Ivory Coast.
However, injuries and the form of Tshegofatso Mabasa and Evidence Makgopa has seen him fall down the pecking order at Pirates, which has seen interest rise in his services in this window, from North Africa and Matsatstsansa but it appears an unlikely reunion by Hunt’s words.
“Big problem [Bradley Grobler injury], I read it in the media, the first time I read about it – I didn’t know anything about it, but if [I wanted him]… we do need some strikers yes,” Hunt said when asked by iDiski Times about the reported Lepasa interest.
“We need strikers, we don’t have strikers, we lost Ighodaro, we lost Bradley who gave us 20 goals last year. Where are we going to get 20 goals? We need to get strikers.
“Obviously work permit [is an issue] there should be a law and happening where everyone can get it at the same time, but others get [before], it can’t be like that.”
When pressed whether they are seeking a new forward outside the country, Hunt suggested they have been priced out of the local market this momth.
“We need something, we can’t go locally, we can’t buy, where will we get [the striker]? We lost two strikers, we need strikers, maybe I need to go to Cosatu and get those ones there.”
Hunt’s side kick off their season with a Tshwane Derby against champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday, 17 September at Loftus Versfeld.
