SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt feels they should have finished second if his squad had better game management.
Hunt’s troops finished in seventh place with 44 points, six points behind second-placed Orlando Pirates and four spots below last season’s finish.
Their foray into the CAF Confederation Cup is one of the reasons Hunt felt they couldn’t live up to last season’s standards as well as a youthful squad dominated by DStv Diski Challenge graduates.
“Definitely [this squad has learnt a lot and will be stronger next season] I think the biggest thing in South African football [we need to learn] is game intelligence, and I think we will come out of it better,” Hunt said when asked by iDiski Times about their seventh place finish.
“I think this year there was about four games we were leading and drew them, those points would have put us in the top two, we should have been in the top two, easily. Even with the squad we have, easy, easy, easy.
“But hey I think we learnt a lot, I don’t think playing away in home games didn’t help us with a young squad and being in Africa, six away games in Africa – we didn’t have a home game, those things add up.
“You come back on the Monday, go to Durban on Wednesday, with our squad it was difficult but I think we learnt and we need a bit more game intelligence, we will get that definitely if we can keep hold of the players.”
Gavin Hunt and his charges will commence the 2024/25 season the same way they ended the now-concluded campaign when they take on Pirates in the MTN8 quarterfinals.
