Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson believes that after giving 25 years of his life to the club, Itumeleng Khune should be shown the respect that’s deserving of ‘legend status’.
Khune was on the bench as Chiefs lost 2-0 to Cape Town Spurs on the final day of the DStv Premiership campaign, and was warmly greeted by the fans at DHL Stadium.
Johnson said when asked about Khune’s service, that he is deserving of more accolades than he is currently getting.
“If you look at anywhere in the world, when a player has given his 25 years to a particular club, and within that period, he won games, won trophies, saved them positions, then whatever he’s getting now is not what I’ve seen at other levels,” Johnson said.
“At a different level, I’ve seen people stand up when they see a man like that. So that’s the status I look for him to have in the future – is that when he walks into a stadium, people stand up and greet him. We don’t have that culture, unfortunately, in this country.
“But that makes you very proud to be a legend of a team that you’ve given 25 years of your life. So the next time Itu walks in the stadium, you tell all the yellow and gold people, the black and gold, to stand up.
“Then you are giving him what he needs. And that’s legend status.”
Having played bit-part for Amakhosi during the now-concluded 2023/24 DStv Premiership campaign, it’s unclear if the 36-year-old will be roped into the club’s goalkeeping department or continue his career elsewhere.
