Mamelodi Sundowns defender Grant Kekana says his recent struggle with injury is part of football and vows to fight to get back to the form that earned him the PSL Defender of the Season award and a place in the national team.
Kekana, 32, was awarded the Defender of the Season at the 2023/24 Premier Soccer League awards and formed part of the squad that picked up a bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

However, he’s only played three out of a possible 22 games since the continental event and since the FIFA Club World Cup, where he played all three games, he looked back to his usual best to start the 2025/26 campaign – before injury saw him miss the last eight league games.
“I think this is how football goes, it’s a game of seasons, but every day I put it upon myself to come and do my best,” Kekana said about the efforts now to return back to his best form.
“There will be occasions, where we’re not up to scratch, but we’re a team, we’re a unit, a team full of brothers, when one is down, I can count on the others to pick me up.
“I think my job is to work as hard as I can, knowing I have the full support of my team, the coaches, to get back to the level that is expected of me and it’s what I am working towards.”
Kekana has won four league titles, the MTN8. Nedbank Cup and African Football League with Sundowns, since his arrival from SuperSport United in 2021 and is just three matches short of the 150-game milestone for Masandawana.
