Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana reckons that even though Lucas Ribeiro deserves to be named the campaign’s Player of the Season, people should not forget how immense Makhehleni Makhaula was for Orlando Pirates.
The 35-year-old has featured 31 times for Pirates in all domestic competitions this season and has one goal in the league. Though his side ended up with just one trophy, Makhaula has been hailed as a vital cog in midfield in a season that also saw Pirates reach the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.
Youngsters like Relebohile Mofokeng and Mohau Nkota have grabbed headlines with their impressive performances however Kekana feels that they were able to do so because Makhaula played his part and therefore making him Kekana’s candidate for the Player of the Season accolade.
“This is my Player for the Season [Makhehleni Makhaula],” said Kekana on SABC Sport’s Soccer Zone.
“There was no Pirates without this player, and I’ll tell you why, he gave them stability in the midfield.
“Those who played in the midfield in the highest level they’ll tell you that without this man Pirates they were nowhere because he gave them stability.
“You know he was ready to do the dirty job for Orlando Pirates. There is no Rele [Relebohile Mofokeng] without Makhaula.”
