Chippa United Technical Director Morgan Mammila has compared himself to Patrick Maswanganyi in the debate for Premier Soccer League Football of the Season.
The 25-year-old playmaker has emerged as one of the contenders for the award, which Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena stated Ronwen Williams is the front-runner for this season despite several stand-out players this campaign.
Teboho Mokoena is the current holder of the award, in which he won the prize ahead of another Orlando Pirates player, Monnapule Saleng last season.
Mammilla feels, given this is Maswanganyi’s first full season in the DStv Premiership, his level of performance, merits the most coveted individual honour in South African football for the 2023/24 season.
“To be honest, I’m looking at these factors; how long has Williams been playing in the PSL? How long has Maswanganyi playing, how long has Mokoena played – I will go with Tito because I think it’s his first full season,” he said.
“But his performances have been saying he’s been there for quite some time – he’s like Morgan Mammilla, a first full season from August to December he collected 18 points and there’s a coach [Ernst Middendorp] who’s struggling five months later to reach 18 points but we collected early last year – they haven’t even reached there.
“So we close it now – so for Player of the Season I think the boy deserves it and you can see he entertains through attacking, which is what we want to see, South African flair.”
Maswanganyi has scored eight goals and registered 11 assists in the 33 domestic games this season which the award criteria will be based on.
