Teko Cites Khune After Williams’ Latest Contract

Teko Modise says Ronwen Williams is the first goalkeeper since Itumeleng Khune to perform at such a high level in South African football.

The 32-year-old is currently in career-best form for club and country, having led them to the African Football League title, DStv Premiership title, Nedbank Cup final, CAF Champions League semi-final and an Africa Cup of Nations bronze medal for Bafana this season.

He also scooped the Golden Glove at the AFCON in Ivory Coast and has now been rewarded with a new four-year contract at Masandawana, just two years since he first arrived from cross-town rivals SuperSport United.

“I never saw anticipated anything different, to be honest, I’m glad he signed a new contract with the team, I think he’s been outstanding this season for the club and the national team,” Modise told iDiski Times.

“I don’t remember the last time us having a conversation about a goalkeeper this good besides Itumeleng Khune, it’s been such a long time and for him to come out and doing what he’s doing, he’s inspiring so many goalkeepers and sparking that conversation of good goalkeepers.

“So I’m glad he signed a new four-year deal with Mamelodi Sundowns and of course they still have, as a good goalkeeper as he is, a future captain for the club, but they still have that Champions League drought they need to sort out.”

Williams has emerged as a serious contender for the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Footballer of the Season award with 15 clean sheets in 24 games in domestic competitions this season.
