Chippa United coach Morgan Mammila has revealed what he told Orlando Pirates loanee Goodman Mosele ahead of his Man of the Match performance against his parent club.
In an effort to ignite the fire out of Mosele and to remind him how good he was, Mammila went back five years to show him clips of his best performance at Baroka FC.
Mammila, who was Baroka FC CEO in the 2018/19 season, replayed the Telkom Knockout final to Mosele when Bakgaga beat the Buccaneers on penalty shootouts at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
Mosele played the entire match on that day, knitting things together in the midfield along with Matome Mabeba, Talent Chawapiwa and Mdu Mdantsane to beat Pirates 3-2 on penalties after the game had finished 2-2 in extra-time.
The 23-year-old, who Pirates signed in 2021/22 season but loaned him to Chippa to be reunited with Mammila this campaign, scored as the Chilli Boys drew 1-1 with Pirates in the DStv Premiership at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, taking his chance well on the turn to fire home the equaliser and was also named Man of the Match against his parent club.
It was Chippa’s first goal scored this season after they went blank in the first two matches, and Mammila revealed a personal chat he had with Mosele ahead of the match.
“To be honest, I showed them, especially Mosele, the Baroka vs Pirates game when we [Baroka] beat Pirates through penalties in the Telkom Knockout Cup,” said Mammila.
“I showed him how cool he was, then I took him to Pirates. I said ‘you have done well at Pirates, you even got the call-up to the national team, it does not mean that not playing for Pirates you are not good enough. The only thing I’m going to ask you, don’t show Pirates [how good you are], show the country that you are a better player’.
“And he agreed and said ‘Morgan, cool-headed and thanks for being there for me, you are my father, I’m going to reward you with a good game’ and that’s what he gave.”
While this clearly worked as Mosele fired the equaliser, Mammila also credited the gallant team effort, which will be tested to higher level against Mamelodi Sundowns at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, who are unbeaten in 26 league matches.
“Credit all because we planned against Pirates, one thing for sure. They are an energetic team and offensive,” said Mammila.
“I’ve got two madalas [experienced players] there and the only thing we have to do is to allow them to go wide, so they can’t penetrate us inside.
“We gave them that, they could not break us. Let’s be honest, we created so many chances and were far better than Orlando Pirates. We are a grade A team, it is not a joke and it is not a fluke, we are not here to give teams an easy ride.
“We are going to be a difficult team for the rest of the season to play against.”
Despite the improvement from Chippa this season, they are still without a win in the last five matches, stretching back to last season, and started the new campaign with three draws
