Polokwane City head coach Phuti Mohafe was pleased with star player Oswin Appollis’ contribution despite a slow start, and strongly believes they can challenge for honours this term after his failed move.
Rise And Shine soared to the top of the Betway Premiership standings after a 2-0 victory over Magesi FC in the Limpopo derby against Magesi on Saturday.
City obtained the lead in the 30th-minute from veteran frontman Puleng Tlolane before Sibusiso Thabalala put the match beyond the reach of the PSL debutants.
Speaking to the media after the game, Mohafe had no complaints on how Appollis applied himself in the match, admitting that having the Bafana Bafana international in his arsenal will aid them make themselves counted on the trophy front, after he had been linked to North African clubs as well as domestically to Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs.
“He didn’t start well,” Mohafe told the media in his post-match presser.
“But through around 20-25 minutes that’s when we started to see the real Appollis threatening and coming back to defend.
“I can say he was good on the day.”
Mohafe did not shy away from what it meant still being able to work with both Appollis and Thabang Matuludi.
“For them still being here is a boost for Polokwane City,” Mohafe added.
“Their availability is making us stronger than last season and it makes us continue to play well as a team.
“It gives us hope that we can fight for something in this season. Maybe one of the cups just for an improvement and growth as a team.
“Yes, one we can go for it, and we can go all out,” he said.
