Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana defender Khuliso Mudau says they can’t put themselves under pressure, but they are ready to appease their supporters by getting back to winning ways in the fierce league title race this season.
Sundowns take on Polokwane City at Seshego Stadium this evening, before hosting them at Loftus Versfeld this weekend, with six points on offer, that could take them above Orlando Pirates by five – before the Buccaneers are next in action in seven days time against Stellenbosch.
Having dropped points against Stellies and Richards Bay, with two draws, Mudau is acutely aware that pressure could be telling from both Sundowns and Pirates in the title race – but they are looking to remain calm for the run-in that also includes a CAF Champions League final before the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the off-season.
“We’re taking it one game at a time; we’re not putting ourselves under pressure, I think it’s very important in a situation like this to calm down and focus more on ourselves and not on other things that’s happening,” Mudau said.
“Polokwane City? It will be a difficult game – to be honest. But I believe everyone is ready for the game and yeah it’s going to be tough but we have to go there and make sure we make ourselves, our supporters and families back home happy. It’s very important [to win] after two draws in a row, it’s unlike us, but yeah.”
Mudau rejected the notion that they will look to play a more reserved approach in the first game against Rise and Shine before the Loftus showdown and admits they need to prove a point, to make sure the club’s supporters are happy after four points lost in the past two league encounters.
“There’s no reserving yourself at Sundowns, we want to win every match, obviously playing them home and away, it will be at advantage for them when they are at home but then when they come to Loftus it won’t be nice [for them], we will make it difficult both sides,” he continued.
“Obviously with our fans, I’d like to encourage them to keep on pushing us because we need them to be honest, they have helped us through all these games but we have now disappointed them a bit – with this one coming, we want to take three points to take to the next one.”
