Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi says qualifying for CAF inter-club competitions should now be the target as they look for a foundation for next season.
Chiefs have suffered an inconsistent debut season under Nabi who took over a side who were in disarray, having finished 10th in the league, their lowest position in Premier Soccer League history.
While there have been signs of improvement during the course of the season and glimpses of the future in the form of Mfundo Vilakazi, Mduduzi Shabalala, Wandile Duba, Ruswhin Dortley and a couple of their new signings, they languish in eighth place.
With 27 points separating Chiefs with league leaders Sundowns, Nabi admits a top, three, four spot should be the target, while the Nedbank Cup could also bring qualification for CAF Confederation Cup football next season.
“I have lost to much points, my team, we have lost too many bad points, games where we should have wrapped it up easily,” he tells iDiski Times.
“This has killed us, I understand some fans are not happy about this but I give my apology to that. I am not happy about it either!
“I think we still have an opportunity to get into Africa. This is a challenge, top four, I think it’s possible. Okay week in week out you see us go up, other team go down, next week we go down other team go up.
“But we’re not far, I’m sure we will come back strong, I have some players who are coming back from injuries, Wandile Duba, Ox Mthethwa.”
Three points seperate Amakhosi and third-place Stellenbosch, with 10 rounds of fixture reamining in the 2024/25 league campaign.
“The team will go up, I think top four with the possibility for Africa – this would be good for us. Nedbank Cup there’s a chance for qualifying for CAF, but you need to be realistic, we beat Stellenbosch but in the cup it won’t be the same,” he added.
“They are a very tough team – but I want us to fight, I want my players to respect the Kaizer Chiefs brand.”
