Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has explained he is trying to protect Mfundo Vilakazi and that’s why he isn’t starting more games.
Vilakazi, 19, came on as a first-half substitute in Chiefs’ 2-1 win over Stellenbosch, and again impacted the game positively.
Despite featuring in 11 of Chiefs’ 12 league games this season, Vilakazi has only started one game so far, with Nabi explaining the player still needs to develop – especially physically – to start more regularly.
“He’s a talent from the academy of the club. He’s only 19 years old; I would say that his development, even his physical development is not yet 100%,” Nabi stated.

“This means we need to protect the player, we need to give him time that he’s going to showcase himself.
“We believe that he doesn’t yet have the consistency of playing successive 90 minutes games without time to recover.
“We feel that those minutes that he’s getting is going to give him the confidence, the momentum, and the physical status as well.”
