Riveiro On Maswanganyi Player Of The Season Debate

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro says Patrick Maswangwanyi is a clear candidate for the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Footballer of the Season.

This comes in the wake of Maswaganyi’s scintillating form in his debut season with the Buccaneers, where even Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena touted him within the race for the 2023/24 season honour.

While Mokwena name dropped plenty, he suggested Ronwen Williams was the front-runner this season.

Riveiro was more coy about the debate, but admitted he’s profited from the team being in a great run of form recently.

“I think people are in love with him and who am I to say who the people should love or identify as Player of the Season,” Riveiro said about Mawanganyi.

“I think the South African football fans have good taste about football, they know the football they want to see and let’s see, like I said it’s important that the team is getting good results, good performances and within that, the individuals can shine. He’s a clear candidate, but let’s see.”

Maswanganyi, 26, has scored nine goals with 10 assists in 34 games across all competitions this season and has brought many topics of discussion around showboating at times.

With his natural flair for lifting the crowds, home, and away this season Riveiro was not keen to discuss the matter of whether it’s an instruction or if he is in favour of it.

“I didn’t see him, did he stand on the ball today? I didn’t see – I don’t know…”
