Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi says he would rather win the league than Defender of the Season and stated it’s a collective effort from the squad to be recognised as such.
Sibisi, 29, beat off Grant Kekana (Mamelodi Sundowns) and Thabo Moloisane (Stellenbosch) for the honour at the 2025 Premier Soccer League awards on Tuesday evening.
However, the newly appointed skipper of the Soweto giants says it’s not for him to bask in the recognition as it’s not a solo-effort to lead a strong defensive unit.
“It’s been a good 24 hours for me from my side, it’s very nice to receive such an award but for me, I don’t pride myself on such, I’d rather win the league than get Defender of the Season because that’s a collective [honour],” Sibisi said.
“I think the guys have helped a lot in what we’ve been doing – because defending doesn’t start with me, it starts up front, this award it’s not really for me, but for everyone involved, all the players and everyone I worked with last season.”
Sibisi won the MTN8 and racked up 42 appearances for the league runners-up, who also reached the Nedbank Cup final and the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League in the 2024/25 season.
