Spurs Sweating Over Venue For Stellies Match

Cape Town Spurs are working day and night to find a venue for their DStv Premiership clash against Stellenbosch FC when the league resumes.

Spurs have been using Athlone Stadium as their home venue and have in the past also used the DHL Stadium.

But the Urban Warriors, who find themselves at the bottom of the table, are sweating over getting a venue after the unavailability of both stadiums for the game scheduled for 28 October, as both venues will host different events on the day.

The DHL Stadium will host a ABUNTU Concert, while Athlone Stadium will host a women’s rugby event. Stellies’ home ground Danie Craven Stadium is also not available, as they will be hosting a rugby event on the day.

A close source within the club told iDiski Times that Spurs tried to get the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium but unfortunately it is also not available.

This publication has now been informed that the club is looking at getting the Princess Magogo Stadium or King Zwelithini Stadium for the Western Cape derby.

Playing outside the province will mean that Spurs will have to pay costs for both clubs, travelling and accommodation.

“Spurs normally spend approximately R200,000 in total costs for an away game. Now they will have to pay for Stellenbosch as well, because they are the home team and the PSL rules stipulate that if a venue is more than 100km from the original venue the costs must be covered by the home team,” a source told iDiski Times.

“The club tried to get Danie Craven Stadium but it is also not available, Nelson Mandela Bay is also not available,” the source added.

There are several venues in the Western Cape, which were not approved by the Premier Soccer League due to their standard, including two used for Diski Challenge games, Idas Valley and UWC Stadium.
