Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Thlopie Motsepe has hailed the impact of Sporting Director Flemming Berg, crediting him for the signings of Marcelo Allende, Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Siyabonga Mabena.
Masandawana secured their seventh successive league title, but just missed out on an ‘Invincibles’ season on the last day of the campaign, losing 1-0 at home to Cape Town City.
However, Motsepe was full of praise for the current squad, especially Berg for finding players like Allende and Ribeiro.

“I think it’s important to give a lot of recognition to the coach, to Flemming Berg, our Sporting Director – he’s been amazing since he arrived,” he said on the Pitchside Podcast.
“He’s brought talent like Marcelo Allende, he’s spotted Lucas Ribeiro – and that’s just in the first team.
“He saw Mabena, brought him in. He’s given him an opportunity to be where he is.
“Really, the team is in a position now, where we can see that there is the ability to take it to the next level, there is the ability, there is the talent.
“Teko you always say, your team, your generation had more grid, and this team has the talent.”
Motsepe also admitted that maybe the setback in the CAF Champions League, MTN8 as well as the defeat against City came at the right time for one of the best squads in the club’s history.
“We didn’t achieve the title as ‘Invincibles’ today and that’s a setback but a setback is part of moving forward in live,” he added.
“I truly believe what happened in the Champions League, being knocked out in the semi-final, being knocked out in the MTN… Winning [the league] today, but maybe not going all the way in terms of invincibility, it gives us those moment that we can use to push forward.
“Where we are now is we are in good position to achieve some special things.”
