Tinkler Praises In-Form Mayo

Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler has praised Khanyisa Mayo after scoring City’s 2-1 winner over Chippa United, which was his sixth league goal for the season.

Mayo finished last season as the joint-top goal scorer on 12 goals with Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile. The Eastern Cape-born forward didn’t start this season well, as he failed to score in the first five league games.

But as the pressure started to mount for him, the former Richards Bay man opened his account in a 3-2 loss to AmaZulu FC in Durban. Since then, he has been on fire as he netted five goals in the last four matches.

“I told you right at the beginning, work ethic. When Mayo is prepared to run, and work and chase, be active, the goals will come. Why? Because he has the ability to score goals,” Tinkler told iDiskiTimes

“But if he is reactive then it’s difficult. You see now Mayo is very active, his work-rate is exceptionally. I played him as a winger today, Mayo never complains, that’s the one good thing about Mayo.

“Changes his position, today he is playing here because that happened and that happened, ‘No problem coach, I’m in’.

“And then I moved him back to striker [and] he kept working. All those are the positives of Mayo.”

He is currently the join- top goal scorer with SuperSport United striker Bradley Grobler and Moroka Swallows striker Tshegofatso Mabasa, who have all scored six times in 2023/24 so far.

Mayo also recently became the club’s all-time top goal scorer, overtaking the tally of Mduduzi Mdantsane, who netted 21 times before leaving to join Kaizer Chiefs.
