Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi has discussed Mduduzi Shabalala’s showboating in the Soweto Derby, saying he’s worried about local football when ‘showboating’ is not used to eliminate an opponent.
Shabalala was seen side-stepped the ball during Saturday’s Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates, which got many of the fans excited.
Though Chiefs won the game 1-0 the incident happened while the match was locked at 0-0.
Some supporters believe the showboating is part of the South African football identity but Vilakazi is one of those not impressed by it, if it’s not used to beat an opponent.
“I’m worried if that is how we are showboating. If we call that a skill then it means there is a lot that we need to learn in our football,” he said on iDiski TV.
“A skill is where you get the ball and take a man on. That’s how you use your skill but when the ball is there and you are jumping on top of the ball and not minusing an opponent, what type of skill are you showing us?
“A skill is what you use to minus an opponent, creating space for yourself so that you can go and attack.
“That’s how you need to show us the skill but jumping on top of a ball, I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong.”
