Mfundo Vilakazi came off the bench to steal a late victory for Kaizer Chiefs against 10 men Sekhukhune United at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday.
Chiefs enjoyed the Lion’s share of possession in the opening half though they could not break the deadlock owing to their own decisions and a stubborn Badra Ali Sangare in the Sekhukhune goals.
Wandile Duba had several chances to put the homes side in the lead missing the target in the opening five minutes and again in the 17th minute while he was denied by the keeper in the 21st minute.
Rushwin Dortley also had a great chance to score in the opening 10 minutes but only forced Sangare to save his header from a Samkelo Zwane kick.
George Matlou who got his first start of the season was also a handful for the Babina Noko defense creating chances for Sibongiseni Mthethwa who missed the target and Tebogo Potsane who saw his efforts denied by the Ivorian keeper twice. Matlou also had his own attempt saved by Sangare in the 40th minute.
Meanwhile, the visitors also had some chances though slim in the half just before the half hour mark. Andy Boyeli needed to just tap in a ball from Katlego Otladisa but missed the target while Vuyo Letlapa tested Bruce Bvuma from range with no success.
The start of the second half saw a double substitution by Sekhukhune as they brought on Linda Mntambo for Vusimuzi Mncube and Tshepo Mokoena for Otladisa while Chiefs remained unchanged.
The opening minutes didn’t produce as much action in front of goal as the first half. It took 13 minutes for Sekhukhune to create a real scoring opportunity from a corner but Daniel Cardoso headed over the bar.
Six minutes after the hour it was Chiefs’ turn when Zwane set-up substitute Yusuf Maart who fired from range but his effort went wide. Nasreddine Nabi’s charges had another shot with 11 minutes left on the clock this time Maart being the supplier to another sub Mfundo Vilakazi who in the end was denied by Sangare.
Lehlohonolo Seema’s side finished the game with 10 men as Letlapa was shown a red card in the 86th minute for a challenge on Vilakazi. Soon after Vilakazi seized a heroic moment scoring the winner in the dying minuets of the encounter.
The result means Amakhosi move to fifth position with 21 points from 14 games while Sekhukhune remain fourth with 24 points from 13 matches.
