Akpeyi Been Dreaming Of CAF Final
Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi says that he’s been dreaming about playing in another CAF Champions League final for twelve years.
The Nigerian international was in the Heartland FC squad that lost in the two-legged final in 2009 to TP Mazembe.
The Nigerian club had won the first leg 2-1, but suffered heartbreak in the second leg as they lost 1-0 in the DRC.
Akpeyi says since witnessing that loss (he was not in the starting line-up), he has aimed at reaching and final, but this time winning it.
Now after his and his Chiefs’ teammates’ heroics this campaign, he has another chance in a final when Chiefs face Al Ahly in the final in Morocco.
“I am very delighted to be in the CAF finals with my team,” Akpeyi told the club’s media department.
“It has been an interesting journey, and has been an exciting one as well.
“One of my goals in my career is to actually play in the Champions League, and win. The last time I was at the final was 2009, with one of my previous teams and we lost it to TP Mazembe. And afterwards, I’ve always looked forward to playing the Champions League and getting to the final, winning it again.
“I’ve actually played with several teams, we get knocked out in the group stage, but with hard work and determination, today I’m in the final again, and I’m very grateful to God for this moment of my career, because it’s a big dream come true for me.”
