Pirates Give Update On Zinnbauer Future
Orlando Pirates have given an update on the future of Josef Zinnbauer amid speculation he could be fired.
The German tactician came under pressure towards the end of last season after Pirates dropped out of the CAF Confederations Cup, losing 5-1 on aggregate to Raja Casablanca, and also finishing outside the top two in DStv Premiership.
Rumours flared up after Pirates appointed Mandla Ncikazi after he vacated his role as head coach at Golden Arrows, with reports in local media linking him with a potential reunion with Steve Komphela.
Pirates administrative officer Floyd Mbele, though, says Zinnbauer has returned to South Africa to lead the club into pre-season.
“The team is back in pre season. Today we were doing Covid testing. It’s important that we adhere to the regulations and also play our part. Coach JZ is also back, he came back last week and will lead pre-season training,” Mbele told Thabiso Mosia on SAFM.
“Pirates has always had a Coach and two assistant coaches, even in the days of Micho. That’s why we brought Coach Ncikazi.
“We didn’t want to make wholesale changes, but with hindsight, it’s important that we tackle the battle differently this time.”
However, Mbele also indicated that it is a “delicate situation” which could change.
“Right now, that’s how the situation is but it could change at any moment. It’s a delicate situation,” he added.
“Zinnbauer is still employed by the club and for now, he will lead the team. Its fluid, that’s what I can say.”
