Pirates Announce Squad Update

Orlando Pirates have announced an update about their squad for the 2021/22 season after several players returned from loans and others have had their contracts expired.

The Buccaneers started their pre-season for the new campaign on Monday morning, although some fitness examinations and Covid-19 tests were already conducted last week.

Pirates confirmed the “technical team will reduce the playing complement to a manageable number” but as of this moment, negotiations with players and their representatives are still going on.

“We met with the technical team last week and they have requested time to assess all the players, including those returning from loan before they can present their recommendations,” administrative officer Floyd Mbele told the club’s official website.

“With respect to the players whose contracts have come to an end, contract negotiations are still ongoing.

“We are in advance talks with their respective representatives and will make the necessary announcements in due course.”

Mbele also confirmed that pre-season for the Buccaneers began on Monday morning.

“Preseason training starts today however, the players and technical staff returned last week. As a Club it is important that prior to any resumption of training taking place, we need to ensure that the necessary medical tests are done,” he added.

“Covid testing has become the norm. All our players and staff members had to undergo testing. Obviously, this is not a once off, as we are required as per the leagues’ return to play protocols, to continuously test and take the necessary precautions.”

Pirates already added Mandla Ncikazi to their technical team but are yet to confirm any further changes.
