Can Pirates Win The CAFCL? Riveiro Responds

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro was very careful in his response if they could go all the way and win this season’s CAF Champions League title.

The Buccaneers go into their last group match against defending champions Al Ahly in Cairo on Saturday undefeated having picked up three wins with two draws and topping Group C.

The Spanish mentor was very cagey in his response, opting to rather summarize their journey in Africa this campaign instead of entertaining title talks.

“Look, like I said before, it’s a day to feel happy for what it’s done. It’s unbelievable to be already with one game in hand in the quarterfinals,” Riveiro told the media.

“We started with Al Ahly and CRB. Two fantastic teams, clubs and the way that we did it, it’s something to feel proud of.

“Now, we still have to play in Cairo one more game. We want to show a good picture of ourselves in that game even though we’re in quarterfinals. It’s an opportunity to be top of the table in the end of the group stage.

“And that’s the only thinking in our mind. The next game is go to Cairo, is perform, is still playing our football, it’s improve because having an opportunity to play against these teams it’s a luxury for us as a group because it’s pushing you to the limit when you have the opportunity to play continental football.

“The background that these games are going to leave in our players, in our group, is something you cannot pay, you cannot quantify.

“So, we want to enjoy until the last moment of the competition.

“The next game is Al Ahly in Cairo. Our focus is there. Once we go to the quarterfinal we try to prepare ourself as good as possible as we used to do and that’s it.

“I don’t think that it’s time to talk about the word that you said before [title] and I’m not going to repeat.”
