Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper says Mamelodi Sundowns are the “pillar of South African football” after Masandawana lifted their second CAF Champions League title.
Sundowns held ASFAR to a 1-1 draw in the second leg of the CAF Champions League final, with Teboho Mokoena scoring the important equalizer before the half-time break after Mohamed Rabie Hrimat had opened the scoring from the squad.
The PSL giants, though, survived the pressure from the home side as well as the noise and hostility from the stands to finally lift their second CAFCL title.
After the match, Khune was full of praise for the two-time African champions, saying even Bafana is benefitting from the quality in Miguel Cardoso’s squad.
“Well deserved victory,” he said on SABC.
“And they deserve to lift the trophy. They are the pillar of South African football, and they have represented us very well in this continental football showcase.
“And I think that’s why even Bafana Bafana is benefiting from Mamelodi Sundowns players.”
Sundowns secured $6 million in prize money and also qualified for the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup, as well as the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the 2026 CAF Super Cup.
The newly-crowned African champions arrived in the country via OR Tambo airport on Monday evening.
